Fiji Rugby Union Makes Comeback in World Rugby Council

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has had its membership restored within the World Rugby Council. This decision follows a meeting of the World Rugby Executive Board in late July, during which the board assessed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee.

The report highlighted the successful convening of a Special General Meeting by the FRU, at which members unanimously endorsed a new constitution and governance framework. This development is regarded as a significant move toward enhancing transparency, accountability, and leadership within Fiji Rugby.

FRU Chairman Peter Mazey expressed gratitude for the support from World Rugby and acknowledged the efforts of their stakeholders. He stated, “The adoption of our new constitution and governance framework is a testament to our dedication to moving Fiji Rugby forward. This reinstatement is not just a victory for our Union but for all our players, coaches, and fans who have stood by us during this period.”

Mazey further emphasized that this reinstatement will enable Fiji Rugby to reinforce its connections within the global rugby community and advance its efforts to promote the sport in Fiji.

As a result of this development, the FRU will now put forward a nominee for the World Rugby Council, who will undergo a vetting process according to the World Rugby Integrity Code before assuming their position.

World Rugby has also expressed appreciation to Fiji Oversight Committee members Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong for their contributions in aiding the FRU to achieve this favorable outcome. The FRU remains dedicated to maintaining the values and standards established by World Rugby.
