Fiji Rugby Union Introduces Structural Changes in Board Nominations

The recent restructuring of the Fiji Rugby Union, which eliminates the Prime Minister’s nomination to the board, is likely to face resistance.

Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, expressed his dissatisfaction with the structural change. He remarked that he has referred the matter to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his comments. “The PM should comment on it first,” Saukuru stated.

This structural change was approved during Saturday’s Special General Meeting held at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Convention Centre.

FRU interim Trustees Chairman Peter Mazey emphasized the importance of professional management in rugby operations. “We need to ensure that we have the very best people to run it, not just the management and CEO, but at the board level,” he said.

Mazey announced that the annual general meeting would be convened in 45 days, during which the new board of directors and chairman of FRU would be elected. He stated that the new structure is union-oriented, with unions nominating and voting for each position.

“There will no longer be a government or a Prime Minister’s nominee or a World Rugby appointee; it will purely be Fiji Rugby with union members voting,” Mazey explained.

He noted that all union members had unanimously agreed to the proposed structure, which also includes the elimination of the patron and president appointments.
