The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has expressed deep disappointment regarding recent corruption allegations against the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) made by overseas-based players. Speaking to SUNsports, Gavoka, who is also a former chairman of the FRU, highlighted the challenges faced by the board of directors and staff at Rugby House.

His comments follow an interview given by former Flying Fijians captain Waisea Nayacalevu to the Daily Mail, in which Nayacalevu discussed plans to boycott last year’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final against England due to unpaid bonuses and issues of corruption within the FRU. Senior players including Semi Radradra, Levani Botia, Meli Derenalagi, Jiuta Wainiqolo, and Albert Tuisue have supported Nayacalevu, calling for the removal of the interim trustees and employees at the FRU.

Gavoka emphasized that everyone involved in rugby administration is honorable and volunteers their time, acknowledging the sacrifices made by individuals in leadership roles. He expressed sadness over the players’ claims, insisting that the administration should not be held solely responsible for ongoing problems in Fiji rugby.

He noted that rugby is an expensive sport, particularly in Fiji where resources are limited. Despite these constraints, Gavoka reaffirmed the desire to compete against top teams like England and France, urging understanding regarding the financial disparities between them and Fijian players.

Gavoka pointed out that funding remains a persistent challenge for the FRU, stating, “You look at the guys who are running the show today, they are all honorable people who gave so much to rugby.” He remarked on the reality that people working for the FRU often come to work uncertain if they would receive their pay.

Gavoka concluded by reiterating the harsh economic realities faced by Fiji, stressing that the country does not have the resources needed to operate rugby at the level that is often expected.
