The Flying Fijians rugby team will not receive any bonuses for match victories during their upcoming November tour, as confirmed by Peter Mazey, the interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This decision arose after a request from a player through the players’ welfare association, suggesting that bonuses should be paid for match wins. Mazey emphasized that the union does not support this idea, stating, “If they participate in the Rugby World Cup or achieve consistent wins, then we can consider it.”
He explained the financial constraints faced by the union, mentioning that the Rugby World Cup campaign cost around $11 million, with a substantial portion allocated for player expenses. Mazey reiterated the importance of prioritizing national representation over personal financial gain, indicating that the FRU must manage its resources responsibly.
Board member Jenny See-to added that bonuses typically depend on government support, as the union lacks the funds to provide bonuses independently. Thus, recognition for player performance is contingent upon external financial assistance rather than internal sources.
In summary, while the Flying Fijians will not receive bonuses for match wins this November, the focus remains on unity and national pride in representing Fiji. It is a reminder of the financial realities facing sports organizations and the importance of sustainable practices in the competitive landscape of rugby.
Despite the disappointment over the lack of bonuses, this decision can encourage players to focus on teamwork and national pride, emphasizing that the spirit of the game transcends financial incentives.
