Fiji Rugby Union Celebrates Major Comeback in World Rugby Council

The Fiji Rugby Union has regained its membership in the World Rugby Council following a meeting of the World Rugby Executive Board in late July. During this meeting, the board assessed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee, which highlighted the successful holding of a Special General Meeting by the FRU. At this meeting, members unanimously accepted a new constitution and governance structure, marking an important advancement in promoting transparency, accountability, and effective leadership within Fiji Rugby.

FRU Chairman Peter Mazey expressed gratitude for the backing from World Rugby and appreciation for the commitment of their stakeholders. He stated, “The adoption of our new constitution and governance framework demonstrates our commitment to advancing Fiji Rugby. This reinstatement is a triumph for our Union and for all our players, coaches, and fans who have supported us through this period.”

Mazey also indicated that this reinstatement will enhance Fiji Rugby’s connections within the global rugby community and facilitate the continued growth of the sport in Fiji. As a result of this development, the FRU will nominate a representative to the World Rugby Council, who will undergo vetting under the World Rugby Integrity Code before assuming their role.

Furthermore, World Rugby acknowledged the contributions of Fiji Oversight Committee members Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong for their efforts in guiding the FRU to this successful resolution. The FRU remains dedicated to maintaining the values and standards established by World Rugby.
