The Fiji Rugby Union’s membership in the World Rugby Council has been reinstated. This decision came after a meeting of the World Rugby Executive Board held in late July, during which they reviewed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee.
The report highlighted that the FRU successfully conducted a Special General Meeting, where members unanimously approved a new constitution and governance framework. This move is viewed as a significant advancement in promoting transparency, accountability, and robust leadership within Fiji Rugby.
FRU Chairman Peter Mazey expressed gratitude for the support received from World Rugby and acknowledged the commitment of their stakeholders. He stated, “The adoption of our new constitution and governance framework demonstrates our commitment to advancing Fiji Rugby. This reinstatement is not just a triumph for our Union but for all our players, coaches, and supporters who have remained steadfast during this time.”
Mazey further noted that this reinstatement would enhance Fiji Rugby’s connections within the global rugby community and support its efforts to expand the sport in Fiji.
Following this development, the FRU will appoint a representative to the World Rugby Council, who must undergo vetting in accordance with the World Rugby Integrity Code before assuming their role.
World Rugby also expressed appreciation to members of the Fiji Oversight Committee, Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong, for their efforts in facilitating this successful outcome. The FRU is committed to maintaining the values and standards established by World Rugby.
