The Fiji Rugby Union has announced that its membership in the World Rugby Council has been reinstated with immediate effect, as confirmed by World Rugby. This important decision follows a meeting of the World Rugby Executive Board in late July, where they reviewed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee.
The report noted that the Fiji Rugby Union successfully conducted a Special General Meeting, during which members unanimously approved a new constitution and governance structure. This development is a significant step towards achieving transparency, accountability, and effective leadership within Fiji Rugby.
Peter Mazey, Chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union, expressed his excitement regarding the reinstatement. He stated, “We are incredibly grateful for the support of World Rugby and the commitment shown by our stakeholders throughout this process. The adoption of our new constitution and governance framework demonstrates our commitment to advancing Fiji Rugby. This reinstatement represents a victory for our Union as well as for all our players, coaches, and fans who have supported us during this time.”
Mr. Mazey added that this progress will enable the organization to strengthen its connections within the global rugby community as they continue to promote the sport in Fiji. He looks forward to collaborating with fellow council members to make positive contributions both nationally and internationally.
With the reinstatement, the Fiji Rugby Union is expected to nominate its representative to the World Rugby Council, who will need to pass vetting under the World Rugby Integrity Code before officially assuming their position.
The World Rugby Executive Board expressed appreciation to the Fiji Oversight Committee members, Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong, for their commitment and efforts in successfully guiding the Fiji Rugby Union through this process.
The Fiji Rugby Union is eager about this new phase and remains dedicated to fostering the growth and development of rugby throughout the nation. The organization will continue to work hard to uphold the values and standards set forth by World Rugby.
