Fiji Rugby Union Announces Structural Change, Removes Prime Minister’s Nomination from Board

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has endorsed structural changes that will eliminate the Prime Minister’s nomination on the board. Despite expressing his dissatisfaction, Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has presented the issue to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his comments. The changes were approved at a Special General Meeting at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Convention Centre.

FRU interim Trustees chairman Peter Mazey stated that they aim to ensure rugby operations are executed professionally. He further explained that the new organizational structure would prioritize a union-based approach, where union members nominate and vote for individuals to occupy each position. The government and Prime Minister nominees, along with a World Rugby appointment, are no longer included.

According to Mazey, union members fully agreed with the suggested alterations. Moreover, the appointment of a patron and president will also be removed in the new structure. The FRU is due to elect its new board of directors and chairman at the upcoming annual general meeting in approximately 45 days.
