Fiji’s captain for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, Waisea Nayacalevu, alongside senior teammates Levani Botia and Semi Radradra, has decided to address serious concerns for the future of Fiji rugby, emphasizing that their stance is not financially motivated. During a recent discussion on a popular social media podcast, they highlighted allegations of mismanagement by the Fiji Rugby Union regarding incentive commitments made since the Rugby World Cup.

Nayacalevu stated, “It is not about the money, but rather about the future of the next generation of Fiji rugby players.” He pointed out that the agreements related to player payments prior to the World Cup remain unfulfilled, declaring that enough is enough. He emphasized that this issue has persisted for a long time, tarnishing the reputation of Fijian rugby, and called for a more professional approach at the leadership level of the Fiji Rugby Union.

Botia supported Nayacalevu’s remarks, noting that he, like many others, has yet to receive a promised bonus of $105,000, although players have received a salary of $30,000 in two parts, before and after the World Cup. “I have no idea where it went,” Botia expressed. The senior players are now advocating for a thorough investigation into the current circumstances surrounding these financial matters.
