Fiji Rugby Legend Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese Passes Away at 77

The rugby community in Fiji mourns the loss of a notable figure, Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese (Snr), a former national captain, head coach, and administrator. Ratu Ilaitia, who was 77 years old, passed away at his home in Nausori last Saturday after a brief illness, a loss confirmed by his family.

Ratu Ilaitia was not only distinguished in sports and administration but also played a significant role in nation-building, serving as Minister for Regional Development and Multi-Ethnic Affairs in the interim government in 2000. Following that, he was appointed Minister for Agriculture, Sugar, and Land Resettlement during the 2001 general elections.

Inducted into the Fiji Rugby Union Hall of Fame, Ratu Ilaitia was a key figure in the early days of sevens rugby in Fiji. He captained the Fiji 7s team as a player in 1977 at the Hong Kong 7s tournament, where they achieved victory for the first time. He returned as the team’s coach in 1980, leading them to another Cup final win.

Former teammate Pio Bosco Tikoisuva remembered him as a true gentleman both on and off the field. Both players participated in Fiji’s historic victory over the British Lions in 1977 and were honored as FRU Life Members in April 2019. Tikoisuva noted Ratu Ilaitia’s expertise in lineouts and his exemplary sportsmanship, stating, “We’ve lost a respected and humble man.”

Ratu Ilaitia made his international debut in the 15s format on June 25, 1969. FRU general manager of operations and development Sale Sorovaki praised him as an educated player who frequently offered valuable advice for improvements in the sport, describing him as a “Flying Fijian legend.”

Viliame Takayawa, secretary of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), remarked on Ratu Ilaitia’s strong support for the party and his essential contributions to land management and development initiatives for indigenous peoples under the Laisenia Qarase government.

At the time of his passing, Ratu Ilaitia served as chairman of the Fiji SUN board. He is survived by his wife, Adi Sokoveti Raditora Tuisese, as well as his children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
