Fiji Rugby Legend Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese Passes Away at 77

The Fiji rugby community is mourning the loss of Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese Sr., a notable figure who served as a national captain, head coach, and administrator. He passed away at the age of 77 last Saturday at his home in Nausori after a short illness, as confirmed by his family.

Ratu Ilaitia was more than just a rugby player; he played a significant role in national development. He served as Minister for Regional Development and Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs in the interim government in 2000, later becoming the Minister for Agriculture, Sugar, and Land Resettlement after the 2001 elections.

A Hall of Famer in the Fiji Rugby Union, Ratu Ilaitia was a trailblazer in sevens rugby. He captained the Fiji 7s team during their historic first victory at the Hong Kong 7s tournament in 1977. He returned to the tournament as a coach in 1980, leading the team to another Cup final win.

Former teammate Pio Bosco Tikoisuva remembered him as a gentleman both on and off the pitch, highlighting his skills and sportsmanship. Together, they were part of the Fiji team that defeated the British Lions 25-21 in 1977 and were both inducted as Life Members of the FRU in April 2019.

Ratu Ilaitia made his international debut in 15s rugby on June 25, 1969, in a match that ended in a loss. Sale Sorovaki, the FRU general manager of operations and development, expressed deep sorrow at the passing of a “Flying Fijian legend,” noting the valuable advice and insights Ratu Ilaitia provided throughout his life.

Viliame Takayawa, the secretary of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), recognized Ratu Ilaitia as a strong supporter of the party and commended his contributions, particularly during the Laisenia Qarase government, which initiated a land buy-back scheme. Takayawa reflected on the significant loss of knowledge in land management and development for indigenous peoples.

At the time of his passing, Ratu Ilaitia was the chairman of the Fiji SUN board. He is survived by his wife Adi Sokoveti Raditora Tuisese, their children, and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
