As tensions escalate between the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and senior players regarding allegations of delayed payments, key figures in the rugby community are emphasizing the urgency of finding solutions to safeguard Fiji’s rugby reputation.

Sowane Puamau, president of the Namosi Rugby Union, has conveyed his thoughts on the situation, urging both sides to resolve their differences swiftly and privately. The ongoing dispute has attracted considerable media attention due to claims that senior players are experiencing issues with timely payments, leading to growing discontent.

Puamau has refrained from discussing the details extensively, recognizing the sensitive nature of the matter. He stated, “It is imperative that they quickly find solutions to the stand-off and fix it to avoid publicity of internal affairs of both FRU and the senior players.”

Using a metaphor, Puamau compared the situation to smoke, implying that it signifies deeper issues needing to be addressed. “Smoke does not start by itself. It requires heat, fuel, and oxygen to produce smoke and eventually fire,” he noted. He highlighted the visible signs of unrest, expressing concern that this could escalate into a significant crisis that might damage the sport’s image.

“Right now, legally, what they signed is what they will get. I feel for the players; if management made those verbal promises,” he added, encouraging players to ensure that any commitments made by officials are documented to safeguard their interests.

With rugby being a source of pride for Fiji, Puamau asserted that a rapid resolution is crucial to avoid further rifts between the FRU and its players. His appeal underscores a broader sentiment within the rugby community that emphasizes the importance of transparency and clarity in contracts to maintain a harmonious relationship between management and players.
