Fiji Road Safety Concerns Addressed

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) took significant actions from August 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024, counselling 58 drivers, issuing 1,206 warning letters, suspending 13 driver licenses, and cancelling 112.

Despite a reduction in road fatalities as of July 11, 2024, with 29 deaths compared to 51 for the same period last year, LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the causes of road accidents. Speeding remains the leading cause of accidents and fatalities, followed by drink driving and driver fatigue.

Mr. Rokosawa also pointed out that incidents involving pedestrians at fault and hit-and-run cases are areas of significant concern.

“The LTA is committed to addressing these issues through stringent enforcement, comprehensive monitoring, and ongoing road safety awareness campaigns,” he said.

In July, the Authority and the Fiji Police Force launched a special awareness operation aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of jaywalking and encouraging responsible behavior among pedestrians.
