The Ministry of Education has announced the reinstatement of interviews for Year 13 students who have aspirations to become teachers. This new initiative, developed in partnership with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), is designed to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training throughout Fiji.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro highlighted the significance of implementing a rigorous selection process to attract candidates who are not only passionate but also qualified for the teaching profession. This initiative aligns with the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, aimed at forging stronger partnerships among stakeholders within the education sector and the Ministry of Education.
The core objective of the declaration is to ensure that graduates are comprehensively equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to succeed in classrooms across the nation. Eligible students can apply for scholarships through programs such as the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, which cover various Bachelor of Education programs, including specialized fields such as Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts.
Students should note that the deadline for online applications to the TSLS is set for 31st January 2025. Those who successfully apply will be informed of their interview dates and locations through email and phone notifications.
This initiative signifies a proactive step towards ensuring a competent and well-prepared teaching workforce for Fiji’s future, which is crucial for the advancement of education in the country. By reintroducing this selection process, the Ministry of Education is setting a standard that may inspire more students towards a fulfilling career in teaching, ultimately benefiting the educational landscape in Fiji.
