The Ministry of Education has announced that interviews will be reintroduced for Year 13 students who wish to pursue careers in teaching. This move, in partnership with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), aims to improve the standards of teacher recruitment and training throughout Fiji.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro highlighted the necessity of a thorough selection process, stating that it is crucial to attract candidates who are both passionate about education and suitably qualified for the demands of the teaching profession.
This initiative is part of the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which aims to strengthen the collaboration between various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education. The declaration focuses on ensuring that graduates possess the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for effective teaching in classrooms across the country.
Eligible students can apply for scholarships through the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, which cover several Bachelor of Education programs along with specialized fields such as Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts.
The deadline for submitting applications to the TSLS is January 31, 2025. Successful candidates will be informed of their interview dates and venues via email and phone notifications.
In summary, the reintroduction of interviews for prospective teaching students not only elevates the standards of teacher recruitment in Fiji but also serves to better prepare future educators, fostering a more robust educational environment for the country’s youth. This initiative is a positive step towards enhancing the quality of education in Fiji, ensuring that passionate educators are leading the classrooms.
