Following the Fiji Residents’ impressive 22-10 victory against Samoa at the HFC Bank Stadium on Saturday, head coach Vula Dakuitoga expressed that this win held significant importance, especially as it allowed the team to avenge last year’s defeat to Samoa.
“We’re really pleased with today’s result,” Dakuitoga remarked. “The match against Samoa was one we aimed to win, particularly after that challenging loss last year in the Solomon Islands. It was an opportunity to reward our fans and demonstrate the dedication we have put in.”
Dakuitoga commended the team’s effort and commitment, highlighting the win’s significance not only for the present but also for the future of rugby league in Fiji.
“The boys played exceptionally well,” he stated. “I told them before the match that our only goal was to win. I hope today’s success will have a positive impact on the Fiji Residents in the coming years, motivating players and drawing more support for rugby league at home.”
When inquired about the team’s upcoming plans, Dakuitoga mentioned that the Fiji Residents would take a brief break before competing internationally again next year. He noted that the organization aims to involve other Pacific nations, including Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands, to develop a new format for regular matches.
In concluding his comments, Dakuitoga extended his gratitude to the team, coaching staff, and all supporters of the Fiji Residents throughout the competition.
“Thank you to all the boys, the coaching staff, and the friends who have backed us. It’s been a fantastic journey, and we’re eager to celebrate this victory together.”
