The Ministry of Education has reintroduced interviews for Year 13 students who aspire to become teachers. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), seeks to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training throughout Fiji.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro highlighted that a rigorous selection process is essential for attracting candidates who are both dedicated and qualified for the teaching profession. This initiative aligns with the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which aims to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders within the Ministry of Education.

The goal of the declaration is to ensure that graduates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in classrooms across the nation. Eligible students can apply for scholarships through the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, which cover various Bachelor of Education programs, including specialized fields like Early Childhood Education, Counseling, and Industrial Arts.

Students are reminded that the deadline for online applications to TSLS is January 31, 2025. Successful applicants will be notified about interview dates and venues via email and phone calls.

In summary, this initiative is a positive step towards enhancing the teaching profession in Fiji by ensuring that only passionate and well-prepared individuals enter the workforce, ultimately benefiting the education system as a whole.
