The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially in the Western Division, to take immediate action to protect themselves from the rise of climate-sensitive diseases following recent floods. With water levels beginning to go down, there is a heightened risk of diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea (LTDD), which often increase following flooding events.

Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, Ragigia Dawai, emphasized the importance of taking preventative measures, stating, “While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high.” The organization has actively assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in need across evacuation centers and local communities in the Western Division.

In response, the Fiji Red Cross has distributed essential hygiene items and supplies including Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets to support affected residents. Teams are continuing to monitor the situation closely and offer necessary assistance, particularly in areas identified as hotspots for LTDD.

The organization urges anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical care promptly, as early intervention can be life-saving.

Additionally, the Fiji Red Cross acknowledges the generous contribution of clean drinking water from Frezco Beverages Ltd, which plays a critical role in the recovery phase for affected families. Ms. Dawai noted the importance of clean water, saying, “This contribution will go a long way in supporting communities as they recover.”

Gratitude is also extended to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners for their collaboration during this period. “Strong partnerships are essential in times like these, and we deeply value the support and teamwork that have made our efforts more impactful,” Ms. Dawai highlighted.

As the community works together, there is hope for resilience and recovery, showcasing how collective efforts can help mitigate the risks and foster a healthier environment post-disaster.
