The Fiji Red Cross Society is encouraging communities, particularly in the Western Division, to implement immediate precautions against climate-sensitive diseases following recent floods. As floodwaters begin to recede across Fiji, concerns are rising regarding diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea (LTDD), which tend to increase during this period.
“While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high,” stated Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of Fiji Red Cross Society. She emphasized the importance of taking simple yet crucial steps to protect oneself and family members at this time.
In recent days, the Fiji Red Cross has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in both evacuation centers and local communities. Essential supplies such as Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets have been distributed to those in need.
Teams in the Western Division continue to monitor the situation closely and are ready to offer additional support as required. It is important to note that there are specific hotspot areas for LTDD in the Western Division, which necessitates heightened vigilance and preventive measures from residents.
The Fiji Red Cross advises anyone experiencing symptoms of these diseases — including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue — to seek medical attention without delay, as early treatment is vital for recovery.
Additionally, the Director General expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous contribution of clean drinking water for affected families. “Clean drinking water is crucial at this stage, and this contribution will significantly support communities in their recovery,” Ms. Dawai remarked.
The Fiji Red Cross also acknowledged the collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, highlighting that strong partnerships are essential during such crises. “We deeply value the support and teamwork that enhance the effectiveness of our efforts,” Ms. Dawai added.
The ongoing initiatives aim to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks and support affected communities in their journey towards recovery.
In summary, the collaborative efforts of organizations like the Fiji Red Cross and generous donations from businesses underscore a community-focused response to the challenges posed by climate-related events. Such teamwork fosters resilience and hope as families work towards recovery and regaining their health.
