Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Pacific region during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government officials meeting held in Nadi. Phillip Hereniko, Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, delivered a keynote address emphasizing this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific.” He noted that this theme resonates deeply as the country acknowledges that the future of the region is in the hands of its youth.
Hereniko highlighted that the Ministry has been at the forefront of youth development initiatives, underscoring that their dedication is not merely about policies and programs; it is a fundamental part of the national agenda. He discussed various initiatives undertaken by the Ministry, including a review of youth development policies and laws, the establishment of the National Youth Council of Fiji, and the launch of The Youth Education Sex App, aimed at informing young people about sexual and reproductive health services.
He expressed gratitude to organizations such as UNFPA and UNICEF for their support and stressed the importance of inclusivity in youth development, ensuring that every young person, regardless of background, gender, or location, is supported. Hereniko also acknowledged the success of Youth Festivals and symposiums that unite young Fijians from differing backgrounds to celebrate their diversity while expressing their aspirations and challenges.
As discussions at the Senior Officials Youth Meeting continue, Hereniko emphasized Fiji’s goal to build on previous progress, share experiences, and develop innovative strategies to empower the next generation. He highlighted the importance of collaboration, resource sharing, and leveraging the unique strengths of each nation to foster a Pacific region where every young person can achieve their full potential.
