Fiji is set to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is urging all citizens to actively participate in the movement against this critical issue. In a recent national address, Rabuka emphasized that GBV transcends individual communities and requires a united effort to combat it, extending well beyond the duration of the campaign.

Rabuka pointed out the significant impact of GBV, stating that it disrupts families and communities, ultimately affecting Fiji’s progress as a nation. He underscored the importance of addressing GBV continuously, stating, “Gender-based violence is an issue that demands our collective action—not just during these 16 days, but every day of the year, every year.”

The Prime Minister highlighted that the fight against violence toward women and girls ought to be viewed not only as a social concern but also as a critical national priority. He reflected on how violence erodes family stability and community resilience, calling for a dual approach of prevention and justice: “Violence robs families of their stability, communities of their strength, and the nation of its potential.”

Rakesh Chand, the Deputy Director of Community-Oriented Policing, echoed Rabuka’s sentiments, urging parents to be particularly watchful as the festive season approaches, as it often leads to increased incidents of domestic violence. He encouraged families to cultivate safer home environments during this time.

The theme for this year’s activism campaign—“From Prevention to Justice, Ending Violence, Impunity Against Women and Girls in All Spaces”—aims to bolster efforts in both preventing violence and holding violators accountable, while also fostering safe spaces for women and girls.

Rabuka’s remarks serve as a rallying cry for all Fijians, including governmental institutions and local communities, to collaborate against GBV. “Ending gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility,” he stated, encouraging collective action toward a future where women and girls can exist without fear, and where justice prevails.

As the campaign kicks off tomorrow, citizens are invited to engage in various activities and discussions that aim to drive substantial change within their communities.

The concerted effort during these 16 days represents not only a commitment to addressing violence but also a hopeful step toward creating a safer Fiji for all. By maintaining the momentum beyond the designated period, there is potential for lasting change in the fight against gender-based violence.
