Fiji Pushes for Urgent USP Council Meeting: What’s at Stake?

Fiji has invoked its rights as a member of the University of the South Pacific Council and requested a Special Council Meeting, set to take place later this month.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro shared with FijiLive that he communicated with the USP Council Secretariat after meeting with Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad and Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh.

Radrodro mentioned that the meeting was led by Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka while he temporarily assumed the role of Prime Minister.

He noted that the Secretariat responded with several proposed dates for the meeting, set for September.

Although Radrodro has yet to meet with the two USP Unions, he is considering their concerns as part of the agenda for the upcoming meeting.

“I hope that good sense will prevail in terms of understanding the situation we are in. The University is a regional institution, and given that its headquarters is in Fiji, we are also aware that a significant portion of the staff are Fijian citizens. This is why we are exercising our rights to call for the Special Council Meeting,” Radrodro stated.
