Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that he will meet with former FijiFirst and Opposition MPs this weekend. This follows the recent de-registration of the FijiFirst political party by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ana Mataiciwa, leaving 26 former MPs without a party.
Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu requested the meeting, which is intended to discuss the political status of these MPs and how they can continue to serve their parliamentary duties. “I’m meeting them this weekend. It’s just a group request from Mo (Mosese),” Mr. Rabuka stated.
Earlier in the week, Mr. Rabuka expressed his openness to discussions and emphasized the Government’s commitment to working together on national issues. He mentioned his ongoing communication with Bulitavu, who is his nephew, highlighting their longstanding relationship since their time together in SODELPA.
In a related development, former FijiFirst Opposition MP Aliki Bia, now an Independent MP, expressed his readiness to support the coalition government led by The People’s Alliance/National Federation Party and SODELPA. Bia, previously a journalist, said he is open to any responsibilities that may be offered by Mr. Rabuka. “I am open to any opportunity of responsibility offered by the Prime Minister,” Mr. Bia said. “I’ve consulted with my family and my voters. If I am offered opportunities to help government – govern the people of Fiji, I’ll be more than ready and willing to give my support.”
Mr. Bia joins other Opposition MPs including Penioni Ravunawa, Viliame Naupoto, Ketan Lal, Mosese Bulitavu, and Semi Koroilavesau in this effort to seek new roles within the government.
