Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, will be the Government’s nominee for Fiji’s new President when Parliament meets at the end of this month. This decision follows the formal withdrawal of Ratu Wiliame Katonivere from his nomination for a second term as President.
On October 17, 2024, Prime Minister Rabuka sought Ratu Katonivere’s approval to be nominated for reelection as President and Head of State under section 84(2) of the Fijian Constitution. However, on October 21, 2024, Ratu Katonivere communicated his decision to withdraw from the nomination.
Mr. Rabuka also paid tribute to Ratu Wiliame for his distinguished service to the nation. He expressed appreciation for Ratu Wiliame’s integrity and composure during his term, emphasizing the smooth governmental transition following the December 2022 elections. He noted that Ratu Katonivere upheld the Constitution diligently and promoted unity and integrity for Fiji, both domestically and internationally. During his presidency, Ratu Wiliame fostered an open State House and engaged in significant diplomatic efforts with grace.
A formal ceremony will be held in accordance with traditional customs to honor Ratu Wiliame at the conclusion of his term, reflecting the nation’s gratitude for his contributions.
