Fiji Prepares for Presidential Transition: New Nominee Announced

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, will be the Government’s nominee for Fiji’s new President when Parliament meets at the end of this month. This decision follows the withdrawal of Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s name from the nomination for a second term as President.

In a statement released early in the morning, Mr. Rabuka explained that on October 17, 2024, he had reached out to Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to seek his approval for a second term under the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji. However, on October 21, Ratu Wiliame formally communicated his decision to withdraw from the nomination.

Mr. Rabuka expressed his appreciation for Ratu Wiliame’s years of service, acknowledging his integrity and dedication as Head of State. He emphasized Ratu Wiliame’s role in ensuring a smooth governmental transition following the December 2022 general election and noted his commitment to upholding the Constitution despite challenges.

Ratu Wiliame’s presidency has been characterized by significant freedoms for Fijians, symbolizing unity and integrity both domestically and internationally. During his tenure, he opened State House to all Fijians and conducted important diplomatic missions with grace.

Mr. Rabuka stated that a formal ceremony would be held to thank Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional protocol at the conclusion of his term.
