Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, will be the Government’s nominee for Fiji’s new President when Parliament meets at the end of this month. This announcement follows the withdrawal of incumbent President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere from consideration for a second term.
On October 17, 2024, Prime Minister Rabuka requested Ratu Wiliame’s consent to be nominated for another term as President and Head of State, as outlined in the Constitution of Fiji. However, on October 21, Ratu Wiliame formally withdrew his name from the nomination process.
In his statement, Mr. Rabuka praised Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated service. He highlighted Ratu Wiliame’s commitment to duty and his integrity as Head of State. Rabuka noted that Ratu Wiliame played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth governmental transition following the December 2022 elections and upheld respect for the Constitution amidst external pressures.
During his presidency, Ratu Wiliame fostered an unprecedented sense of freedom for Fijians and served as a symbol of national unity. He also opened State House to the public and engaged in important diplomatic efforts.
Rabuka announced that a formal ceremony would be held to honor Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional customs, expressing the nation’s gratitude at the conclusion of his term.
