Fiji Powerlifting Championship Shatters Records and Breaks Barriers!

The Fiji Powerlifting Federation concluded an impressive year with the National Powerlifting Championship held last week at the University of the South Pacific Fitness Centre. The event featured over 46 athletes competing, sponsored by Pacific Energy, showcasing the sport’s significant growth and emerging talents in Fiji.

This championship served as both a celebration of strength and a pivotal moment for powerlifting in the nation. The competition brought together a mix of experienced veterans and rising stars, with a notable increase in female and junior participants, breaking barriers in numerous ways.

Fiji Powerlifting president Viliame Lagonilakeba announced that 22 national records were set, with several competitors exceeding personal limits by lifting over 300 kg. “The championship has become a highlight of the powerlifting calendar, showcasing a dynamic mix of seasoned lifters and new talent, particularly among female athletes. The atmosphere was charged with energy,” he stated.

He emphasized the Federation’s dedication to promoting the sport’s growth, leveraging its recent successes at the Pacific Games. The rise in female participation and the impressive performances of Fiji’s sub-junior and junior athletes stood out at this year’s championship, with many competitors exceeding their previous bests.

Lagonilakeba expressed gratitude to Pacific Energy for their crucial support in making the event a success. The National Federation is now setting its sights on the upcoming Oceania Powerlifting Championship in Nauru from October 30 to November 2. As the final team selection is underway, the Federation is collaborating with the Fiji Sports Commission to secure funding and is encouraging the wider community to support the athletes in their mission to enhance Fiji’s presence on the international stage.
