The Fiji Powerlifting Federation concluded its fourth and final event of the year with the National Powerlifting Championship on September 14 at the University of the South Pacific Fitness Centre. The year began with a novice competition, and since then, the sport has seen a significant increase in interest.

Federation president Viliame Laginikoro noted that this championship attracted over 46 athletes, marking it as one of the largest local powerlifting events. “The championship has become a highlight in the powerlifting calendar, showcasing a thrilling mix of experienced lifters and rising talent, particularly among female competitors. The atmosphere was electric,” Laginikoro remarked.

The event illustrated the Federation’s commitment to growing the sport and building on its recent successes at the Pacific Games. Notably, there was a remarkable rise in female participation, with many competitive female lifters taking part, alongside a solid representation of sub-junior (under 18) and junior (19-23) athletes. Laginikoro emphasized that the youthful energy and competitiveness of these young athletes added excitement to the event.

The competition was characterized by several impressive displays of strength, with 22 national records broken across men’s and women’s divisions. Many athletes reported achieving personal bests, with several successfully lifting over 300 kg.

The day was filled with camaraderie, as athletes encouraged one another while competing fiercely for top honors. The community spirit in the powerlifting scene was evident, with experienced lifters mentoring younger participants, pushing them to reach their limits.

Laginikoro highlighted the strict adherence to competition rules and standards that distinguished this year’s championship. “From equipment checks to strict judging, the event was expertly organized to replicate the conditions of an international competition,” he explained. This professionalism is part of the Federation’s broader initiative to elevate the quality of competition and better prepare athletes for global events.

Special thanks were given to Chairman’s gym for providing calibrated plates for the event, enhancing the athletes’ experience with equipment that meets international standards. FASANOC also contributed two new powerlifting bars, which proved beneficial for the competition.

Laginikoro stated that hosting such rigorous competitions helps athletes become mentally and physically prepared for future challenges, emphasizing the importance of discipline, precision, and strategic planning for success at elite levels. He expressed gratitude to Pacific Energy for their essential support, which contributed to the event’s success.

With the National Championship now over, the Federation is turning its attention to the Oceania Powerlifting Championship scheduled for Nauru from October 30 to November 2, 2024. The team to represent Fiji is currently being finalized, and the Federation is collaborating with the Fiji Sports Commission to secure funding. They are encouraging corporate entities and stakeholders to support the athletes as they aim for international success.

This National Championship has underscored the rapid growth of powerlifting in Fiji, and with ongoing support, the Federation is confident that Fiji will soon make a significant impact on the international powerlifting scene.
