The Fiji Powerlifting Federation successfully concluded its National Powerlifting Championship on September 14 at the University of the South Pacific Fitness Centre, marking its fourth and final competition of the year. The event drew significant interest, kicking off with a novice competition earlier in the year and attracting over 46 athletes.
Federation president Viliame Laginikoro highlighted the championship as a key event in the local powerlifting calendar, showcasing a mix of experienced lifters and rising talents, particularly among female competitors. He noted the positive atmosphere and enthusiasm that accompanied the event.
A notable achievement this year was the surge in female participation, with many competitive female lifters showcasing their strength. The event also saw a strong presence of sub-junior (under 18) and junior (19-23) athletes, signaling a promising future for powerlifting in Fiji. Laginikoro commended the energy and competitiveness of these younger athletes, which enhanced the event’s excitement.
The competition featured remarkable performances, with 22 national records broken in both men’s and women’s divisions. Many athletes achieved personal bests, and a significant number successfully lifted 300 kg or more.
The atmosphere was characterized by camaraderie, as athletes cheered for one another amidst fierce competition. Experienced lifters provided mentorship to younger participants, fostering a sense of community within the powerlifting scene.
Laginikoro emphasized the rigorous adherence to competition standards this year, including thorough equipment checks and strict judging, to emulate international competition conditions. This professionalism is part of the Federation’s strategy to enhance the competition quality and prepare athletes for global challenges.
A special acknowledgment was given to Chairman’s gym for supplying calibrated plates for the event, as well as to FASANOC for providing new powerlifting bars. Such measures help athletes adapt to international standards, benefiting them mentally and physically for future challenges.
Laginikoro expressed gratitude to Pacific Energy for its support, which played a vital role in the event’s success. As the championship wraps up, the Federation is now turning its attention to the Oceania Powerlifting Championship scheduled for Nauru from October 30 to November 2, 2024. They are in the process of finalizing the team that will represent Fiji and are seeking support from corporate entities and stakeholders to facilitate funding for the team’s participation.
The successful National Championship underscores the rapid growth of powerlifting in Fiji, and with ongoing support, the Federation is optimistic about making a significant impact on the international stage.
