The Fiji Powerlifting Federation successfully concluded its fourth and final competition of the year with the National Powerlifting Championship held on September 14 at the University of the South Pacific Fitness Centre. The year began with a novice competition, leading to a notable increase in interest in the sport.
Federation president Viliame Laginikoro reported that the championship attracted over 46 athletes, becoming one of the largest powerlifting events in the local calendar. He noted the event showcased a mix of experienced lifters and rising talent, especially among female competitors, creating an electric atmosphere.
The federation’s commitment to promoting the sport was evident, especially following their recent successes at the Pacific Games. This year saw a remarkable rise in female participation, with many competitive female lifters taking the stage. Additionally, there was strong representation from sub-junior (18 years and under) and junior (19-23 years) athletes, indicating a promising future for powerlifting in Fiji. Laginikoro highlighted the enthusiasm and competitiveness of the younger participants, which added excitement to the competition.
Laginikoro mentioned that the intense competition led to several standout performances, with 22 national records broken across both men’s and women’s divisions. Many athletes also achieved personal bests, pushing their limits, including a notable number who successfully lifted 300 kg or more.
The event was marked by camaraderie and sportsmanship, with athletes supporting one another throughout the fierce competition. The community spirit was strong, as experienced lifters guided younger athletes in their quest to push past their boundaries.
Laginikoro emphasized the strict adherence to competition rules this year, noting that the event was organized to reflect the standards of international competitions. He acknowledged Chairman’s gym for providing calibrated plates that met international standards, along with two new powerlifting bars supplied by FASANOC for the event.
This rigorous competition structure allowed athletes to become familiar with the high standards they will face on the global stage, promoting discipline and strategic planning essential for success at elite levels.
Laginikoro expressed gratitude to Pacific Energy for their generous support, which significantly contributed to the event’s success. With the National Championship now complete, the federation’s focus shifts to the Oceania Powerlifting Championship scheduled for October 30 to November 2, 2024, in Nauru. They are currently finalizing the team to represent Fiji and are working with the Fiji Sports Commission to secure the necessary funding. The federation is encouraging corporate sponsors and stakeholders to support their athletes as they aim to elevate Fiji’s status in international powerlifting.
This National Championship has reinforced the rapid growth of powerlifting in Fiji, and with ongoing support, the federation is optimistic about making a significant impact on the international powerlifting stage.
