The Fiji Police Force has issued a warning regarding a social media post that has been spreading claims about youths allegedly injecting chemicals into fresh coconuts, purportedly to incapacitate homeowners and facilitate theft. This alarming post includes an image of individuals lying on the ground with police officers nearby, raising concerns among the public.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu, addressed the situation by urging the community to refrain from sharing unverified information, which could cause unnecessary fear and panic. He encouraged those spreading such claims to make sure their statements are documented and submitted to law enforcement for proper verification.
Driu emphasized that the police require reliable information before taking any action. He pointed out that the Fiji Police would communicate if there was a confirmed trend of such criminal behavior and advised the public to be cautious when sharing information across social media platforms.
To enhance public safety, the police are urging residents to report any suspicious activity through official channels, including Crime Stoppers at 919, and the Serious Organised Crime & Intelligence Department (SOCID) at various listed contact numbers.
The police reassured the public that they would promptly inform the community if any legitimate patterns of criminal behavior were discovered. In the meantime, they have urged citizens to remain observant and report any dubious activities directly to authorities.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information before sharing it online, which can help mitigate unwarranted panic and maintain community safety. By promoting vigilance and collaboration between the police and the public, Fiji can work towards a safer environment for everyone.
