The Fiji Police Force is urging the public to exercise caution following the spread of a concerning social media post. The post claims that some youths have been injecting chemicals into fresh coconuts, also known as “bu,” to sedate homeowners and facilitate theft.
This alarming image, depicting individuals lying on the ground with police in attendance, has raised significant concern among the community. In response to the anxiety this has caused, Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu, has called for restraint against distributing unverified information that could incite fear or panic.
Driu encouraged individuals who encounter such messages to report them to the authorities for proper verification. He stated, “We encourage the sharing of information via platforms made public whereby information shared will be kept confidential, so issues can be verified.”
In light of the claims circulating about individuals using chemicals to incapacitate homeowners, Driu emphasized the necessity for police verification before any actions are taken. He noted that if such activities were indeed occurring, the police would communicate with the public transparently and promptly.
The police have also provided various channels for reporting suspicious activities, including Crime Stoppers and the Serious Organised Crime & Intelligence Department. They reiterated the importance of sharing only verified information on social media to prevent unnecessary alarm.
While it is crucial to remain vigilant in light of these claims, the police’s proactive communication encourages a community-focused response, promoting the sharing of accurate information to maintain public safety. The police’s commitment to transparency and verification offers a sense of reassurance to the public.
Summary: The Fiji Police Force has warned against spreading unverified claims about youths injecting chemicals into coconuts to rob homeowners. They call for caution and encourage reporting suspicious activities through official channels, promising to be transparent if any such patterns emerge.
