Fiji Police Urges Parents to Break the Silence on Tough Topics

The Fiji Police Force is urging parents and guardians to engage in open discussions about topics often deemed taboo, as it is crucial for children to receive important information from trusted sources.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Mesake Waqa has highlighted rising concerns regarding children being involved in adult-like behavior, which has led to an increase in teenage pregnancies and juveniles facing charges for sexual offenses.

“Our message aligns with the concerns expressed by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health regarding social issues and young children’s involvement in adult behavior. Parents must consistently guide their children,” said ACP Waqa.

He emphasized the importance of discussing sensitive topics, stating, “We need to feel at ease talking about these subjects because if parents or guardians do not provide the information, children will seek it elsewhere.”

ACP Waqa underscored the vital role of family dynamics in addressing significant challenges facing the youth in Fiji. “Everything begins at home. The message from all parties involved has consistently been the importance of closely monitoring children and their activities to prevent undesirable situations.”

He noted a noticeable increase in reports of missing teens during school breaks and the Hibiscus festival, attributing this trend to ineffective communication. “Strict supervision will protect children from associating with the wrong crowd and becoming embroiled in situations that may affect their lives and futures negatively.”

As efforts to combat the illicit drug trade gain momentum, ACP Waqa cautioned that children are becoming potential targets for drug dealers. “The risk of children being exploited to sell drugs must be taken seriously, as dealers often target areas where juveniles and youths gather.”

He added, “Those involved in drug distribution will go to great lengths to make money and will not hesitate to exploit innocent children.”
