Fiji Police Urges Caution as Viral Video Sparks Hate Speech Concerns

The Fiji Police Force has issued an urgent warning to social media users, reminding them to act with caution and responsibility in light of an investigation into a viral video that is believed to incite violence and promote hate speech. This video features a person residing abroad making inflammatory comments targeted at specific communities. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is now handling the matter.

Commissioner Tudravu expressed his concern over the rising incidents of cyber-bullying, harassment, and hate speech, emphasizing that social media should not serve to divide communities. “I urge social media users to exercise their freedom of speech responsibly,” he stated. The alarming trend of harmful online behaviors has prompted authorities to collaborate with the Online Safety Commission to promote safer and more constructive digital interactions.

This call for responsible online behavior echoes similar sentiments previously expressed by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. During a parliamentary session, he emphasized the negative impacts of inflammatory remarks and trolling on democratic engagement. He urged individuals and social media platforms alike to cultivate an environment conducive to respectful discourse.

Growing public concern over the misuse of social media platforms has intensified discussions about the potential dangers of unregulated content, particularly within forums like ‘ChatFiji’, known for hosting derogatory posts. These discussions have gained traction following tragic incidents related to cyberbullying, highlighting the urgent need for action against harmful online practices.

In a positive light, the ongoing dialogue around online behavior reflects a commitment among Fijians to foster a safer digital environment. With cooperative efforts aimed at promoting civil dialogue and combating misinformation, there is hope for a more responsible and engaged community that uses social media as a tool for connection rather than conflict.
