The Fiji Police Force is urging parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children to prevent them from finding themselves in perilous situations. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, reported that officers from the Valelevu Police and the National Fire Authority were called to assist a 17-year-old student and an 18-year-old woman who found themselves in distress while swimming in the Waikalou River in Kalabu.
During their outing, the two became stranded on the riverbanks as strong currents hampered their ability to cross safely. Authorities quickly mobilized to ensure their safe retrieval. Once rescued, both individuals received counseling, and their parents were promptly notified about the incident before they were able to return home.
With Fiji currently in cyclone season, ACP Driu emphasized the importance of heeding all weather advisories issued by authorities. He underscored that ignoring these warnings not only puts individual lives at risk but also endangers the safety of rescue personnel who respond to emergencies.
This incident serves as a reminder for families to engage in open conversations regarding the potential dangers of swimming and other outdoor activities during adverse weather conditions. By ensuring that children understand the importance of staying safe, families can work together to prevent future accidents.
In summary, parents and guardians are encouraged to take active roles in their children’s safety, especially during challenging weather conditions, in order to foster a safer environment for everyone.
