The Fiji Police conducted a comprehensive two-day operation across Viti Levu, stretching from Navua to Nalawa in Ra. This initiative involved various units including Traffic, K-9, the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, Water Police, Community Policing, Tourist Police, Crime Stoppers, and even the Fiji Police Band.
During the operation, the Traffic and K-9 units performed random vehicle checks, while the Crime Stoppers team engaged with high schools involved in their Scholastic Program. Tourist Police officials visited hotels along main roads to ensure safety for visitors, and the Water Police collaborated with Community Policing to raise awareness within local communities. Additionally, the Fiji Police Force marching band and dance group showcased their talent at several selected locations.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kasiano Vusonilawe, the surprise nature of the operation caught many off guard. The checks revealed some vehicles with expired wheel tax, cases of overcrowding, and a few instances where passengers were found with illegal drugs detected by trained K-9s.
SSP Kasiano emphasized that this initiative also served as a platform for discussing ongoing issues with stakeholders and advocated for the importance of following laws to ensure community safety as the festive season approaches. The Fiji Police aim to continue these awareness exercises to promote a safe environment for all citizens and visitors.
This operation exemplifies proactive policing and community engagement, fostering better relationships between law enforcement and the public while reinforcing the importance of safety and compliance with the law. As Fiji gears up for festivities, such initiatives serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility towards maintaining safety and order.
