A recent drug raid by the Fiji Police Force on an inter-island passenger vessel resulted in the confiscation of multiple bags containing dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. This operation occurred on Saturday as the vessel arrived from the maritime islands.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, authorities discovered seven clear zip-lock plastic bags, 44 additional zip-lock bags, and 572 branches of dried leaves wrapped in a black sulu. These items were found unclaimed. “Our search on shipping vessels will continue in our efforts to eradicate drugs,” stated Driu, emphasizing the police’s ongoing commitment to combat drug trafficking.

Furthermore, on the same day, a 31-year-old unemployed man from Kinoya was arrested after being found with a blue bag containing four parcels of dried leaves wrapped in clear plastic. ACP Driu confirmed that their efforts now also include uprooting marijuana plants in the maritime islands, including locations such as Lau, Levuka, Gau, and Taveuni, as more information is received from the community.

Driu expressed gratitude towards stakeholders who have been instrumental in providing tips leading to the confiscation of drugs and the arrest of suspected individuals. Such collaborative efforts highlight the continuous commitment of the Fiji Police Force to foster a safer environment through proactive policing measures.

Reflecting on the article, it is clear that police operations are not merely reactive but are embedded within a broader strategy to enhance community safety. The ongoing collaboration with community members is essential, providing hope that with joint efforts, the prevalence of drug-related offenses can be significantly reduced, leading to a healthier and safer society.
