The Fiji Police Force has reiterated its dedication to its responsibilities under the Counter Narcotics Strategy, which focuses on reducing drug supply through both proactive and reactive policing measures.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu addressed concerns regarding the perceived inaction of police in apprehending individuals involved in the illegal drug trade. He stated, “We make arrests nearly every day, reflecting our continuous efforts, and every arrest and seizure contributes to our overall reduction objectives.”
ACP Driu emphasized that all received information is thoroughly evaluated and acted upon in a timely manner. He explained that the nature of drug operations varies, with some requiring more time to ensure successful prosecutions. Multiple units support divisional operational efforts, including the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, the FPF K9 Unit, and the Serious Organized Crime and Intelligence Unit.
In addition to enforcement actions, officers are actively engaging with various community sectors through community policing initiatives. ACP Driu noted, “The community plays a crucial role, and we have observed a significant shift toward collaboration with law enforcement, as evidenced by the numerous invitations for community awareness efforts.”
He encouraged community members to collaborate with their Crime Prevention Committees (CPC) and Neighbourhood Watch Zones through the Divisional Managers of Community Policing (DMCP).
