The Fiji Police Force has initiated preliminary investigations into the alleged unauthorized issuance of passports to children associated with individuals connected to the Grace Road group. Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew announced that the subsequent course of action will be determined by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka after further discussions.

This development follows the decision of Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua to resign from his ministerial position to facilitate a fair investigation. Tikoduadua clarified that the passports were reportedly issued without his knowledge or the consent of senior officials within the Department of Immigration.

Chew stated that the preliminary probe will establish whether the investigation will be led by the Fiji Police Force or the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

This situation highlights a significant commitment to transparency and accountability within Fiji’s governmental processes. The willingness of leaders to step aside for investigations reflects a serious approach to maintaining the integrity of public institutions. As the investigations proceed, there is hope that they will bring clarity to the situation and reinforce confidence in the processes governing passport issuance.

In summary, the Fiji Police Force is investigating alleged wrongful passport issuances, and the outcome could lead to procedural reforms that enhance the integrity of the immigration system in Fiji.
