The Fiji Police Force is making strides to enhance its detention facilities, responding to concerns about the treatment of individuals in custody. This initiative follows allegations made by former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, who reported experiencing ‘inhumane treatment’ during his detention last year.
Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci acknowledged the issues raised by Mr. Saneem, emphasizing the force’s commitment to improving current conditions. He stated, “We take note of the issues raised by Mr. Saneem and will try to improve. We are doing our best with what we have to work with… with the facilities that are being used presently and have been used for many years.”
Raikaci highlighted that the police are actively seeking assistance from the government and international partners to upgrade the existing infrastructure, which has faced challenges over the years.
Saneem’s claims included being placed in a cell with a disruptive individual and encountering unsanitary conditions, such as rat feces in the holding area. His allegations came amid legal charges related to receiving a corrupt benefit.
This response from the Fiji Police Force presents a promising opportunity for reform and improvement in the treatment of detainees, underscoring the importance of ensuring humane conditions within the justice system. By taking these concerns seriously, the police can foster trust and accountability in their operations, ultimately benefitting the community as a whole.
As the police work towards enhancing their facilities, there is hope for a more respectful and humane approach to custody, reflecting a commitment to uphold human dignity within the legal framework.
