The Fiji Police Force is taking steps to enhance its facilities, particularly the areas used for holding detainees. This initiative comes in light of allegations made by former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, who reported experiencing ‘inhumane treatment’ during his time in police custody last year. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the commitment to making improvements.
Mr. Raikaci stated, “We take note of the issues raised by Mr. Saneem and will try to improve. We are doing our best with what we have to work with on the ground, with the facilities that are presently in use.” He also noted that the police force is working with the government and international partners to identify ways to upgrade the existing infrastructure.
Earlier this month, Mr. Saneem recounted an incident where he was placed in a holding room with a disruptive intoxicated individual and later moved to a holding cell that was unsanitary, specifically citing the presence of rat droppings. These claims arise as he faces a charge involving a significant financial benefit related to his previous role.
The police’s proactive approach to addressing these concerns is a positive step towards improving the treatment and conditions within their facilities. The focus on collaboration with government and international allies highlights a commitment to reinforcing standards and ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated with dignity and respect.
This initiative could serve as a platform for further reforms in the justice system, which will not only enhance the facilities but also the overall treatment of detainees in Fiji.
