The Fiji Police M-PAiSA task force has taken action against two individuals accused of committing financial deception using the mobile money transfer platform, M-PAiSA. The suspects, residing in Davuilevu and Koronivia, are alleged to have created a car rental scam.
On September 17, the accused reportedly set up multiple Facebook accounts to advertise rental cars, instructing potential customers that payments should be made through M-PAiSA. A victim from Nadi fell for the scheme, sending $190 to the provided mobile number. After attempting to reach the suspects, the victim realized he had been scammed and promptly reported the incident to the Nadi Police Station.
The suspects, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, have been charged with one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This incident serves as a reminder to the public about the importance of exercising caution when engaging in online transactions, especially through social media platforms. It highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to crack down on scams and protect individuals from financial fraud. Law enforcement agencies are working hard to ensure that those who attempt to exploit others face legal consequences, promoting greater awareness and vigilance among consumers.
