The Fiji Police Force has taken steps to connect with individuals who allegedly issued threats to the Verma family following a viral video posted by their son, Bhavik Verma. This video featured Illiesa Toga, a security guard involved in a recent car accident, in which he humbly admitted fault while being recorded without his knowledge.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed that authorities are aware of the threats made against the Verma family, reportedly communicated through calls and text messages. The situation arose after the video garnered significant support for Mr. Toga, leading to a backlash against the Verma family.
“Reports concerning this matter were lodged at the Samabula Police Station,” ACPO Driu stated. “The police have reached out to those making the threats, and investigations are currently underway.”
Sanjay Verma, the father of Bhavik, expressed profound concern for his family’s safety following the alarming messages they received, and he has requested increased police presence near their home in Suva.
Interestingly, the video has sparked a wave of support for Mr. Toga, with Fijians at home and abroad lauding it as a “blessing in disguise” for him. Since the video’s release, Mr. Toga has received more than FJD $3,300 in M-PAiSA transfers from supporters. Despite the positive attention he has garnered, Mr. Toga has called for Fijians to refrain from expressing hostility towards the Verma family.
This incident highlights the complexities of social media and public sentiment, showcasing how one viral moment can lead to unexpected consequences for individuals involved. It is hopeful that the police’s proactive approach will ensure the safety of the Verma family while allowing the community time to heal and foster understanding.
In summary, this situation serves as a reminder of the impact of viral media and the importance of compassion toward all parties involved, encouraging a more supportive community response.
