Fiji police are ramping up their investigation into the assault and robbery of a female crew member from Virgin Australia, which took place near a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, on New Year’s Day. The incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, and law enforcement is currently on the lookout for the suspect responsible for this crime.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the inquiry is ongoing, stating, “It’s an ongoing investigation.” He mentioned that police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify possible suspects. Additionally, officers are collecting information from witnesses, emphasizing their importance in building a strong case. “Once we get credible information on who that particular person is, probably we’ll make an arrest and charge the person for theft or whatever,” he added.
In a related legal development, 24-year-old farmer Ilaisa Tanoa Degei has appeared in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape and indecent assault. He is accused of committing these offenses against a crew member of an Australian airline also on January 1 in Nadi. The prosecution opposed his bail due to the serious nature of the charges, which are categorized as indictable offenses. Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva advised Degei to formally apply for bail in the High Court, and the case is scheduled to be mentioned again on January 20.
As investigations continue into both incidents, authorities remain dedicated to ensuring that justice is served.
Given the seriousness of the situation, it is a hopeful sign that law enforcement is actively pursuing leads and gathering evidence to address these incidents. This comprehensive approach underscores a commitment to the safety and security of both locals and visitors in Fiji, fostering a sense of community resilience against crime.
