The Fiji Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to the Counter Narcotics Strategy, emphasizing both proactive and reactive policing measures aimed at reducing drug supply. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu addressed concerns regarding alleged police inaction in tackling illicit drug trafficking, stating that arrests are being made nearly every day, which underscores ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes.
ACP Driu explained that the processes involved in drug operations may take time as law enforcement aims for successful prosecutions, with numerous specialized units contributing, including the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, the K9 Unit, and the Serious Organized Crime and Intelligence Unit.
Additionally, Driu highlighted the importance of community involvement in these efforts, noting a positive trend where communities are increasingly engaging with law enforcement and sharing information to better empower local initiatives. The police are encouraging community members to participate in Crime Prevention Committees and Neighbourhood Watch Zones, facilitated by their Divisional Managers Community Policing.
This initiative showcases a collaborative approach to crime prevention, reinforcing the message that community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement can lead to more effective outcomes in the fight against narcotics.
The positive engagement between the police force and the community signifies a hopeful step towards a safer environment, where individuals can actively participate in creating solutions to local issues.
