The Fiji Police Force held a weekend ceremony in Suva, Labasa, and Lautoka to honor the twenty-six officers who passed away over the past year. Families of the fallen officers, who served in various divisions, gathered at the Nasova Police grounds to remember their contributions to the nation.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew officiated the Fiji Police Force 2024 Remembrance Day, expressing that returning to the site where many began their careers made this event a bittersweet experience. “This ground marks the beginning of our careers, and today we come together to honor our comrades who are no longer with us while celebrating their enduring memories,” he stated.
In his tribute to the families of the deceased officers, the Acting Commissioner expressed gratitude for their sacrifices. He acknowledged the irreplaceable time lost to duty, saying, “While we signed up for this as police officers, it is not a commitment our families agreed to. We recognize the countless missed birthdays and milestones due to their service.”
As the organization prepares for its 150th Anniversary, scheduled for October 10, 2024, the Acting Commissioner emphasized the importance of looking forward. He reflected on the significant periods in the police force’s history that have shaped its current identity. “While we cannot dwell on the past, we must focus on improving in the present and avoid repeating past mistakes,” he remarked.
The ceremony also commemorated eighteen members of the organization who lost their lives in the last year, underscoring the ongoing dedication of the Fiji Police Force.
