Fiji Police Honor Fallen Heroes Ahead of 150th Anniversary

The Fiji Police Force held a remembrance event this weekend to honor the lives of twenty-six members who passed away in the past year, with ceremonies taking place in Suva, Labasa, and Lautoka. The families of the deceased officers from the Central, Eastern, Southern, and Headquarters Division gathered at the Nasova Police grounds for the occasion.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew officiated the 2024 Remembrance Day for the four divisions. He expressed that returning to the location where many began their policing careers to remember fallen comrades was both poignant and bittersweet.

“Here, we marked the start of our careers, and today we come together to honor our colleagues who have departed and to celebrate the memories that will remain with us forever,” he stated.

The Acting Commissioner also extended gratitude to the families of the fallen officers, acknowledging their sacrifices. “We appreciate your willingness to share their time with us—a precious time that cannot be regained. We will always be thankful for your steadfast support throughout our careers.”

He recognized the emotional toll on families, stating, “Words cannot replace the birthdays and life milestones missed while duty called your loved ones away from home. While we accepted this challenge when we joined the force, it was not a commitment made by you, our families.”

Looking ahead, the Acting Commissioner noted the significance of the upcoming 150th Anniversary of the Fiji Police Force, which will take place on October 10th, 2024. He reflected on the various historical phases that have influenced the organization.

“While we must not dwell on the past or wish for changes in what has occurred, we need to concentrate on the present and examine how we can improve as members of the Fiji Police Force. Though we cannot alter the past, we can learn from it and strive not to repeat past mistakes.”

During the ceremony at Nasova, a total of eighteen officers who lost their lives over the past year were specifically commemorated.
