The Fiji Police Force held a remembrance event this weekend to honor the twenty-six members who passed away over the past year, with ceremonies taking place in Suva, Labasa, and Lautoka. Families of the deceased officers gathered at the Nasova Police grounds to pay tribute to their service to the nation.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew officiated the Fiji Police Force 2024 Remembrance Day for the four policing divisions. He described the event as a bittersweet experience, returning to the place where many began their policing careers. “We gather to remember our comrades who have left us and celebrate their memories that will live on forever,” he stated.
Commissioner Chew expressed gratitude to the families of the fallen officers, acknowledging their sacrifices. He emphasized that the time shared with their loved ones was invaluable and that the families deserved recognition for their unwavering support. He noted, “Words and deeds will never be able to replace the countless missed birthdays and milestones, as duty called your loved ones away from home.”
As the Fiji Police Force prepares for its 150th anniversary, Chew mentioned that the milestone, set for October 10, 2024, would allow reflection on the organization’s evolution through various historical periods. He remarked on the need to focus on current challenges, stating, “While we cannot afford to constantly look back, we must focus on the present to see how we can improve as serving members of the Fiji Police Force.”
During the ceremony in Nasova, eighteen members of the organization who lost their lives in the past year were specifically commemorated.
