In a significant effort to foster transparency and restore public confidence, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew and senior leaders within the Fiji Police Force have recently undergone drug tests. This initiative aims to establish a drug-free environment within the police force and emphasizes the importance of leadership leading by example.
Acting Commissioner Chew highlighted the necessity of a mandatory drug testing policy, which is currently being finalized in collaboration with the Solicitor General’s Office to ensure compliance with Fijian laws. “It is critical that the leadership of the Fiji Police Force takes the first step in reshaping public perceptions regarding police involvement in drug-related matters,” he stated.
The initiative includes not only the Acting Commissioner but also the Acting Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners, along with other high-ranking officials within the Command group, participating in the drug tests.
The new policy for mandatory drug testing will incorporate best practices observed in international law enforcement agencies. The Acting Commissioner noted that addressing public concerns about police engagement in illegal drug activities is a pivotal aspect of this initiative. “Public trust in the police has diminished due to concerns about officer involvement in drug-related offenses. Our aim is to create a drug-free institution free from corruption and misconduct,” he asserted.
This policy marks only one of several measures being implemented to enhance accountability and professionalism within the police force. Commissioner Chew reiterated that all new policies would be developed in careful consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office to align them with Fiji’s legal standards and best practices.
Overall, this proactive approach demonstrates the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to integrity and accountability, paving the way for improved community relations and a safer environment for all citizens.
This initiative is a hopeful step towards rebuilding trust and ensuring that law enforcement is seen as a respected and reliable entity in society.
