The Fiji Police Force (FPF) celebrated their first victory in the Armed Native Constabulary (ANC) Bowl, dedicating the achievement to former officers who laid the foundation for the current team. This sentiment was expressed by head coach Solomone Nute after their 45-31 win against the Fiji Corrections Service at Nasova grounds in Suva yesterday.
The bowl was presented by Turaga Na Vunivalu of Bau, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, to the leaders of both forces. This match marked a historic first meeting between these two security agencies and coincided with the FPF’s 150th Sesquicentennial Anniversary. Moving forward, the competition will be an annual event.
The FPF team, known as the Blues, showcased their strength on home turf, featuring experienced players such as former Fijian Drua prop Timoci Sauvoli, Kini Douglas, and Etonia Rokotuisawa. The Corrections team included notable former sevens players and Olympic gold medalist Josua Vakurinabili, along with Netani Koroisau.
“This is a milestone for us, especially commemorating 150 years of service to all of Fiji,” Nute stated. He acknowledged the challenge posed by the Corrections team but emphasized their determination, stating, “Nasova is our ground so we fought nail by nail and tooth by tooth.”
He dedicated the win to past police officers, recognizing their sacrifices for their families and the community.
In addition, Nute mentioned his plans to observe the Escott Shield Challenge final between Police Blue and Fresh’et Navy, as this will influence his final selection for the upcoming FMF Ratu Sukuna Bowl Challenge. He expressed confidence in his team, highlighting their previous two consecutive wins in the Escott Shield and encouraging the players to strive for success.
The Escott Shield final is scheduled to take place at Buckhurst Park One at 3 pm, preceded by the Koroturaga final between Covenant Red and Nabua White at 1 pm. Admission fees are set at $7 for adults and $2 for children under 12.
